AwaNetz is a German initiative launched by IZES gGmbH, empact GmbH, and DENEFF EDL_HUB gGmbH to accelerate the utilization of unavoidable waste heat for Germany's heat transition. The project aims to establish up to ten pilot waste heat networks within four years and develop a comprehensive knowledge portal covering legal frameworks, technical foundations, funding opportunities, economic calculations, and practical examples. AwaNetz distinguishes between four network types: internal efficiency networks, networks with external heat sinks, municipal heat supply systems, and inter-regional networks. The platform provides digital tools including economic calculators for waste heat from data centers, industry, and wastewater; matching tools to connect suitable partners; standardized use cases; and guides for technical, organizational, economic, and legal aspects. AwaNetz works closely with the Initiative for Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection Networks (IEEKN) to support network formation through experienced moderation, workshops, and matching formats. The initiative also supports qualification for federal funding programs including BEW (funding for efficient heat networks), EEW (funding for energy and resource efficiency in business), and BEG (funding for efficient buildings), with an additional 10% funding bonus for unavoidable waste heat projects.
