About
Founded in 2021, Basque Hydrogen is a private headquartered in Bilbao, Spain specializing in Hydrogen.
Basque Hydrogen is a renewable hydrogen production plant established to drive the energy transition in the Basque Country. The project is a joint initiative between three major energy sector players: Alba (Petronor), Enagás Renovable, and CADEM. The plant utilizes a 10 MW electrolyzer powered by renewable energy sources (solar and wind) to produce hydrogen with zero CO2 emissions. The facility is designed to supply 100% renewable hydrogen to a synthetic fuels demonstration plant under construction in the Port of Bilbao, with surplus capacity available for Petronor and hydrogen refuelling stations. Expected annual production is 1,600 tonnes of renewable hydrogen. The project has received €150 million in government funding through the PERTE ERHA program and has secured project finance with BBVA as lead bank and Kutxabank. Construction began in 2024 with operational start expected mid-2026.
