BE-HyFE (Belgian Hydrogen Fundamental Expertise) is a collaborative research initiative structured as an academic network across Belgian universities and knowledge institutions. It functions as an organized research community (metaphorically, a beehive) focused on fundamental hydrogen research. The project aims to create a Belgian academic hydrogen backbone by coordinating expertise across specialized research groups, previously fragmented across institutions. It supports 16 early-stage researchers covering the full hydrogen value chain, including ammonia cracking, hydrogen storage, fuel cells, electrocatalysis, materials science, and industrial applications. The initiative is funded by the federal Energy Transition Fund and includes an Industrial Advisory Board linking academic research with Belgian industrial hydrogen technology companies.
