About
Founded in 2024, BIG LEAP is a government headquartered in Ninove, Belgium specializing in Energy Storage.
BIG LEAP is a 3.5-year Horizon Europe project funded under grant agreement N 101137815, coordinated by Brussels Research and Innovation Center for Green Technologies. The project brings together 16 partners from 10 European Member States and two international partners. BIG LEAP focuses on developing a three-layer Battery Management System (BMS) architecture specifically designed for second-life battery energy storage systems (SL-BESS). The project integrates adaptable Energy Storage Systems to ensure safe performance across first-life and second-life applications. Key objectives include improving interoperability between battery technologies, extending battery operational lifetime through advanced diagnostics and recalibration, developing state-of-charge and state-of-energy algorithms, creating digital twins for real-time monitoring, and establishing standardization roadmaps. The project includes three demonstration sites: two physical demos in Paris and Prague, and one virtual demo in Morocco powered by a 64 kW PV plant. BIG LEAP addresses critical challenges in battery reuse and circular economy principles, supporting Europe's transition to renewable energy and climate neutrality goals.
