The Bioabfallverband Niederrhein is a municipal waste management authority (Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts) that has constructed a state-of-the-art integrated biogas and composting facility at the Asdonkshof waste disposal center in Kamp-Lintfort, Germany. The facility processes biowaste from the Viersen and Wesel districts through a cascade utilization approach combining anaerobic digestion and composting. The biogas generated during fermentation is converted to electricity and heat via on-site combined heat and power (CHP) units and fed into the electricity grid. The innovative process design eliminates liquid digestate that typically requires external disposal, while producing high-quality compost and renewable energy. The facility is projected to avoid approximately 10,000 tonnes of CO2 per year and was scheduled to commence operations in late 2023/early 2024 with support from Germany's National Climate Protection Initiative.
