Bürgerenergie Freyung-Grafenau eG is a cooperative energy society established in August 2012 to advance the energy transition through decentralized renewable energy projects. Additional PV installations are planned for hospitals in Grafenau and Waldkirchen, as well as commercial buildings. The cooperative is actively developing wind energy projects, particularly the Wagensonnriegel wind farm proposal involving 3-5 turbines near Spiegelau and Frauenau. The cooperative prioritizes regional value creation, citizen participation, and direct energy marketing, rather than profit maximization. As of October 2015, the cooperative had approximately 100 members with combined capital contributions of over 200,000 EUR.
