Bürgersolarstrom is a citizen-owned cooperative established in December 2004 by 40 residents of Feldkirchen-Westerham and Weyarn. Founded as a grassroots initiative to promote renewable energy coverage at community level, the project operates solar installations and wind turbines on municipal properties. Membership is open to all citizens, with investment caps ensuring democratic control (maximum 5 shares of €1,000 per project per member). Over 150 citizens have invested approximately €1.3 million, entirely funding project development through member contributions. Projects are located on municipal roofs and facilities, including a wastewater treatment plant. The cooperative has expanded to include wind energy, with the first turbine commissioned in Feldkirchen-Westerham in 2025. Cumulative CO2 avoided: over 3.5 million kg, with 2,639 tonnes saved in 2022 alone.
