Burgerenergie represents the coordinated efforts of Flemish citizen cooperatives for renewable energy (REScoops) that operate according to International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) principles. The platform aggregates numerous local cooperatives—including Ecopower, Bronsgroen, Stroomvloed, CoopStroom, Energent, Beauvent, and others—that collectively empower citizens to invest in and own renewable energy infrastructure. Members become co-owners of solar installations, wind turbines, district heating networks, and related sustainability initiatives in their communities. Beyond energy generation, REScoops provide complementary services including energy advisory, renovation guidance, group purchasing for solar panels, electric vehicle sharing, and platforms for energy consumption monitoring. The movement emphasizes fair, locally-rooted energy systems that generate both ecological and social benefits while ensuring broad community participation in the energy transition. Burgerenergie itself serves as the platform and coordinating entity under the umbrella organization REScoop.Vlaanderen.
