Circalgae (CIRC ular valorisation of industrial ALGAE waste streams into high-value products to foster future sustainable blue biorefineries in Europe) is a Horizon Europe innovation action project funded with €8.2 million by the European Commission under the HORIZON-CL6-2021-CIRCBIO-01 call. The project aims to transform massively produced but underexploited algal biomass into high-value ingredients through cascade biorefinery approaches. It focuses on optimizing cultivation and harvesting of both macro- and microalgae species (including Spirulina, Pheodactylum, Gelidium, and Laminaria), developing extraction techniques for bioactive molecules, and validating demonstrator products in food, feed, and cosmetics applications. The consortium comprises 21 multi-disciplinary partner entities working across seven interconnected work packages. The project emphasizes sustainability, consumer acceptance, regulatory compliance, and building viable economic models for the algae sector while supporting aquatic ecosystem health.
