About

Founded in 2024, CIRCULAIR is a government headquartered in Germany specializing in Biomass, Biogas, Hydrogen.

CIRCULAIR is a 4-year EU-funded research project (Grant Agreement No. 101083944) coordinated by Dr. Valentin Batteiger at Bauhaus Luftfahrt e.V. The project develops an innovative hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) conversion pathway that transforms abundant agricultural residues such as manure and straw into HTL biocrude, which is subsequently upgraded to liquid hydrocarbon fuels with jet fuel as the primary target product. A key innovation is the thermal coupling of HTL conversion with exothermic wet oxidation of process water, achieving near-thermo-neutral operation while cleaning wastewater. The consortium includes 10 partners from 6 EU countries and aims to advance technical maturity to TRL 4-5. The project explores recovery of volatile fatty acids and ammonia, utilization of HTL solids for soil amendment and carbon sequestration, and synthesis of methanol for marine fuel and chemical applications using green hydrogen and CO from the coupled process.
