About

Founded in 2024, Duisburg Gateway Terminal is a private headquartered in Duisburg, Germany specializing in Hydrogen, Energy Storage.

The Duisburg Gateway Terminal is the largest container terminal in Europe's hinterland, built on the site of a former coal island in the Port of Duisburg. It is Europe's first container terminal to be operated completely greenhouse gas neutral using hydrogen technology. The terminal implements a comprehensive energy transition combining renewable energies (photovoltaic systems), hydrogen-based combined heat and power plants, battery storage, and hydrogen storage systems. It features intelligent local energy network controls, shore power connections for barges, hydrogen-powered shunting locomotives, and fully digitalized cargo movements. The terminal spans 235,000-240,000 square meters with capacity for up to 850,000 TEU annually and features a revolutionary modal split: 40% rail, 40% inland waterway, 20% truck traffic. The project is part of the enerPort II initiative funded by Germany's Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection and involves international partners including Duisburger Hafen AG, Hupac SA, PSA International, and HTS Group.
