E-conversion Cluster of Excellence
Garching, Bavaria, Germany
About
Founded in 2019, E-conversion is a government headquartered in Garching, Germany specializing in Solar, Biomass, Hydrogen.
E-conversion, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) under Germany's Excellence Strategy, is a joint Cluster of Excellence of the Technical University of Munich and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. The cluster focuses on investigating fundamental processes of energy conversion that occur at interfaces where light, charges, and matter interact. Research areas include solar cells, catalytic reactors, batteries, fuel cells, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, photosynthesis, and optoelectronics. The cluster comprises over 40 research groups with expertise in physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science. Research priorities include understanding atomic-level mechanisms of energy conversion, developing efficient energy storage systems, creating sustainable alternatives to rare and toxic materials, and designing hybrid concepts such as solar batteries that combine light harvesting and energy storage. The cluster operates dedicated graduate programs for PhD students and maintains international collaborations through partner institutes.
