About
Founded in 1995, Elwind AG is a renewable energy company headquartered in Winterthur, Switzerland specializing in Wind, Hydro.
Elwind AG is based in Winterthur and holds the rights, technical documentation, drawings, prototypes, generators and spare parts of the Winterthur wind turbine lineage. The lineage began in 1934 when Werner Kern and Max Schaufelberger founded Kern & Schaufelberger, a radio business with a service workshop. The firm developed wind turbines from the late 1930s and founded Windkraft GmbH Winterthur in 1943. It was renamed Elektro GmbH in 1954 to reflect a wider product range including masts, batteries, transformers and small Pelton turbines. The company supplied small wind systems, typically 500 W to 8 kW, to Swiss alpine huts, farms and remote sites, and exported systems worldwide, with over 100 units in Swiss service at one time. Max Schaufelberger is credited as a pioneer of modern wind power in Switzerland. Development ended after his retirement, and in 1995 Elwind AG discontinued further development of wind turbines and sold its rights and spare parts. The information comes from a historical documentation website.
