Energiesysteme der Zukunft (Energy Systems of the Future) is a collaborative academy initiative established in April 2013 by acatech (German Academy of Science and Engineering), Leopoldina (German National Academy of Sciences), and the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities. The project convenes approximately 160 experts from science, research, industry, and policy to develop actionable recommendations for implementing a secure, affordable, and sustainable energy system. Through interdisciplinary working groups, workshops, and policy dialogues, ESYS addresses core challenges in the energy transition including sector coupling, grid resilience, heat transition, battery storage, industrial transformation, and the integration of renewable energy sources. The initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space.
