About
Founded in 2020, European Hydrogen Backbone is a co-op headquartered in Brussels, Belgium specializing in Hydrogen.
The European Hydrogen Backbone is a consortium of 31 energy infrastructure operators from 28 European countries united to develop a seamless pan-European hydrogen transport network. Founded in 2020, the initiative has published visionary infrastructure maps showing pathways for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen supply. By 2030, the backbone envisions five hydrogen supply corridors connecting industrial clusters, ports, and demand centers with 28,000 km of pipelines. By 2040, the network is projected to expand to 53,000 km, with 60% repurposed from existing natural gas infrastructure and 40% new pipelines. The initiative facilitates cross-border cooperation, supports REPowerEU targets for 2030 hydrogen deployment, and provides infrastructure planning critical for European decarbonization and energy independence.
