Focused Energy is a private fusion energy company based in Darmstadt, Germany, founded by renowned fusion scientists and engineers. The company is advancing laser-driven inertial fusion energy (IFE) using deuterium-tritium fuel, building on the proven scientific results achieved at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's National Ignition Facility (NIF). The team achieved fusion ignition in 2021 and demonstrated net energy gain in 2022. Focused Energy's core innovation is the development of precision-engineered, mass-produced fuel capsules (called 'Pearls') designed to increase energy output by 30x compared to conventional NIF indirect drive approaches. The company operates a dedicated fusion fuel laboratory and is focused on solving the engineering challenges required to transition from scientific proof-of-concept to commercial fusion power plants. In 2024, the German state of Hessen provided €20 million in funding to support the development of a commercial fusion power plant prototype. Focused Energy has also established a €6.9 million research partnership with the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics.
