Founded in 2019, Holzheizwerk is a private headquartered in Döttingen, Switzerland specializing in Biomass.

The Holzheizwerk Döttingen is a large-scale wood heating plant with thermal capacity exceeding 20 MWth, designed to provide district heating to the Lower Aare Valley region. The facility is a joint project between REFUNA AG, which has supplied district heating for nearly 40 years, and Axpo Power AG. The plant will burn a mix of 40% fresh wood chips and 60% waste and residual wood from forestry and wood processing industries, supporting circular economy principles. The investment volume for the facility with combined heat and power production is approximately 128 million CHF. The Holzheizwerk will supplement existing waste heat from the Turgi waste incineration facility and will eventually replace heat historically sourced from the Beznau nuclear power plant. REFUNA AG is also evaluating alternative technologies, including a large heat pump using Aare river water, with a technology decision expected by end of 2026.
