ICARUS is a Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Actions project focused on developing sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to align with EU climate mitigation targets for 2030 and 2050, and the ReFuelEU Aviation program. The project works on three main SAF production routes and addresses critical technology limitations. The consortium comprises 20 well-regarded international partners, including five from Mission Innovation Countries (Canada, India, Brazil) and two from the United States serving on the External Executive Advisory Board. The project is structured along four scientific work packages: framework conditions for SAF development, innovations in SAF technologies, cost-effectiveness and sustainability assessments, and best practices for value chain upscaling. Additional activities focus on dissemination, communication, exploitation, and capacity building.
