Initiative Wasserstoff Ostdeutschland (IWO) is a non-profit association established in March 2024 by the six East German states (Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia) to establish the region as a key hub for hydrogen economy development. The initiative coordinates cross-state solutions for hydrogen infrastructure, production, industrial applications, and exports. Members leverage renewable energy potential from wind and offshore resources, existing gas infrastructure, and industrial expertise in chemicals, steel, and manufacturing. IWO operates on a rotating leadership principle reflecting shared responsibility among member states and serves as an ideal partner for hydrogen projects such as TH2ECO.
