About
Founded in 2021, Iw3-hamburg is a private headquartered in Hamburg, Germany specializing in Geothermal.
IW3 is a flagship energy transition project led by Hamburger Energiewerke GmbH and its subsidiary Hamburg Energie Geothermie. The project constructs a geothermal facility to supply climate-friendly district heating to Wilhelmsburg, Hamburg's growing residential area. The geothermal system operates at approximately 1,300 meters depth, extracting thermal water at 45-50°C through a production borehole and reinjecting cooled water via an injection borehole to establish a sustainable closed-loop cycle. The integrated heat network combines geothermal baseload with existing renewable sources: solar thermal systems, industrial waste heat, and electrically-driven heat pumps using renewable electricity to achieve CO2-neutral heating without fossil fuels. The project received €22.5 million in federal funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action under the 'Real-World Laboratories of the Energy Transition' program. Construction began in late 2021, with first district heat deliveries expected in 2026. The project serves as a model for other German and Northern European municipalities seeking sustainable heating solutions.
