About
Founded in 2021, Kufumba is a ngo headquartered in Leutkirch im Allgäu, Germany specializing in Biomass, Other.
Kufumba (meaning 'to cook' in Luganda) is a development initiative founded by Ursula Maurer-Härle in 2021 to support women in Buganga, Uganda. The project promotes efficient cooking stoves made from locally-fired clay and metal, replacing open fires that consume approximately 5 tonnes of firewood annually per household. Women produce recycled biomass briquettes from coal dust, cassava flour, plant biomass, and water—materials locally available and low-cost. Each efficient stove costs approximately €12.50. As of late 2021, 150 stoves were operational in Buganga. The project demonstrates measurable environmental impact: 150 stoves enable approximately 300 tonnes annual CO2 savings, with realistic per-household CO2 reduction of 2 tonnes annually when accounting for seasonal production constraints and continued traditional fire use. The briquettes burn longer and produce significantly less smoke than firewood, improving household air quality and women's health. Beyond cooking, women generate additional income through production of recycled briquettes, handmade baskets, floor mats, and liquid soap. The project is supported by donations and contributions from Brauerei Clemens Härle (€0.05 per bottle of Bio NaturRadler sold).
