About
MarginUp! is a government headquartered in Germany specializing in Biomass, Biogas, Hydrogen.
MarginUp! is an EU-funded initiative that addresses the rehabilitation and sustainable utilization of marginal lands through the cultivation of climate-resilient, biodiversity-friendly non-food crops. The project develops sustainable and circular value chains to produce bioproducts and biofuels from natural raw materials grown on underutilized lands. Operating across seven regional use cases in Argentina, South Africa, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Spain, and Sweden, MarginUp! focuses on low indirect land-use change (ILUC) biomass production while enhancing ecosystem services and biodiversity. The project identifies biophysical and social constraints affecting marginal lands and implements alternative land-use practices including intercropping systems, perennial woody species, herbaceous crops for mushroom production, hemp and kenaf for construction materials, turnip rape for biodiesel, and wet agriculture on rewetted peatlands. By demonstrating profitable production on previously degraded or abandoned lands, MarginUp! aims to increase farming system resilience, support rural economies, and contribute to climate change mitigation through sustainable feedstock production.
