Nahwärme Östringen is a municipal district heating project developed by the City of Östringen, Germany, starting in 2016. The system supplies heat to over 130 buildings in the town center through a network of insulated pipes. The heating plant utilizes a modern wood chip boiler and two combined heat and power (CHP) units, supplemented by two gas condensing boilers for peak winter loads. The energy mix achieves up to 65% from highly efficient CHP and renewable biomass sources, resulting in over 50% CO2 savings compared to conventional heating. The system became operational in October 2021 and is managed in partnership with Bürgerwärme GmbH & Co. KG since October 2024.
