Nahwärme Windeck is a citizen-initiated cooperative project aimed at establishing a climate-neutral, socially compatible local heating network in rural Windeck, North Rhine-Westphalia. The pilot project in Dattenfeld (population ~2,300) seeks to reduce dependence on fossil fuels through renewable heat sources including waste heat recovery from the local wastewater treatment plant and the Sieg river, geothermal energy, solar thermal systems, and biomass. A feasibility study commenced in 2024 with anticipated completion in early 2026, funded by the German Federal Efficiency Heat Networks program. Over 50 property owners have expressed interest as of late 2024. The initiative plans to expand the concept to other districts of Windeck and industrial areas, including the Maueler-Feld industrial park.
