Netzwerk Lebensraum Feldflur is a collaborative network of 27 actors from hunting, nature conservation, and renewable energy sectors founded in 2012 (evolved from the 2003 LebensraumBrache project). The network develops and promotes the cultivation of colorful, multi-year wild plant mixtures ('Bunte Biomasse') as a sustainable alternative to conventional corn-based biogas substrates. These mixtures provide high biomass yields while offering significant ecological benefits: habitat creation for wildlife, food and shelter for animals, insect livelihood support, soil conservation, and groundwater protection. The network conducts research, advises farmers and plant operators on cultivation techniques, and works to anchor wild plant biomass production into agricultural practice across multiple German federal states. Major research phases (2010-2016, post-2011) optimized seed mixtures, cultivation methods, and economic viability under various site conditions.
