Nid4ocean is a 36-month Horizon Europe-funded research project investigating the role of offshore renewable energy infrastructure in biodiversity conservation and restoration through nature-inclusive designs (NIDs). The consortium of 13 academic, environmental, and industrial partners aims to map existing NIDs for offshore renewables, develop assessment frameworks and metrics for ecological and socio-economic impacts, create decision-support tools for stakeholders, and establish guidelines for implementing NIDs across different European sea basins. The project focuses on floating offshore wind technology and seeks to demonstrate that offshore renewable infrastructure can simultaneously deliver clean energy while contributing to ecosystem restoration, provided sound maritime spatial planning and careful infrastructure design are integrated.
