About

oPEN Lab is a Horizon 2020-funded project coordinated by VITO, bringing together 32 partners from 7 countries to create and operate Positive Energy Neighbourhoods (PENs) as Living Labs. A PEN is defined as an energy-efficient and energy-flexible urban area producing net-zero greenhouse gas emissions while actively managing an annual local or regional surplus of renewable energy. The project operates demonstration sites in Tartu (Estonia), Pamplona (Spain), and Genk (Belgium), showcasing replicable solutions for retrofitting existing buildings and district facilities. Over 4.5 years, oPEN Lab identifies and demonstrates commercially viable technology, process, and social innovation packages to enable positive energy buildings and neighbourhoods, paving the way for wider European replication.
