Kaiserslautern, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
About
Founded in 2025, Pfaelzer-waerme is a government headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany specializing in Geothermal.
Pfälzer Wärme is a brand of SWK Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern (the municipal utilities company) dedicated to exploring and developing geothermal energy resources beneath the Kaiserslautern region. The project focuses on hydrothermal geothermal energy—accessing naturally heated deep water reserves to supply district heating and potentially electricity. Through 3D seismic exploration using vibro-trucks and geophones, the company maps subsurface rock formations, fracture zones, and water-bearing layers. Two exploration concessions (Lutrina and Kasimir) covering over 290 km² have been secured. The goal is to decarbonize the city's district heating supply, providing stable, renewable heat independent of weather and fuel imports. Drilling is planned to begin following successful seismic surveys, with geothermal heating supply targeted for 2027. The technology is proven, with over 100 operational geothermal district heating sites across Central Europe and 34 plants currently operating in Germany.
