Powertogas
Dietikon, Switzerland
About
Founded in 2017, Powertogas is a private headquartered in Dietikon, Switzerland specializing in Hydrogen, Biogas, Energy Storage.
Powertogas is a partnership between Limeco, Swisspower, and eight Swiss energy utilities operating an industrial hybrid power plant in Dietikon. The facility converts excess renewable electricity into synthetic methane gas through a three-step process: electrolysis produces hydrogen, biological methanization converts hydrogen and CO2 into methane using microorganisms (archaea), and purification prepares gas for grid injection. With 2.5 MW electrolysis capacity, it is Switzerland's largest power-to-gas installation. The facility produces approximately 18,000 MWh of renewable gas annually, equivalent to the energy consumption of 2,000 households, avoiding 4,000-5,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions yearly. The facility was inaugurated on April 29, 2022, and has been expanded with a CO2 membrane for year-round operations. It enables sector coupling by connecting electricity, gas, heat, and mobility sectors.
