Refhyne is a hydrogen production project funded under the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme (Grant Agreement Number 101036970). The project successfully deployed and operated a 10MW PEM electrolyser in a real-world industrial setting at the Shell Rheinland Refinery in Cologne, Germany. The electrolyser splits water into oxygen and hydrogen molecules using electrical energy from renewable sources. The project validated the business model for using electrolytic hydrogen as an input to refineries, demonstrated access to grid balancing revenues in current markets, and created evidence for policy and regulatory changes needed to support this market. Project partners included Shell, Element Energy, ITM Power, SINTEF, and others. The project has concluded with final results from operation available from March 2022.
