Silbat is developing disruptive electricity storage technology that turns intermittent renewable energies into fully dispatchable electricity sources. The core innovation stores electrical energy as heat in molten silicon at approximately 1410°C, then converts it back to electricity using thermophotovoltaic cells tuned to capture infrared emissions. The technology leverages silicon's abundance (second most abundant element in Earth's crust) and high latent heat of fusion, enabling cost-effective, energy-dense storage. Key advantages include: independent sizing of charge and discharge power, modular 10-100 hour designs, very fast startup times similar to PV systems, 100% depth of discharge with minimal degradation, and all-electric operation with no moving parts. The company targets CAPEX under $10/kWh, enabling fully renewable energy paradigms. Founded by leading researchers including Prof. Antonio Luque, a pioneer in modern photovoltaic science, Silbat was selected for the inaugural Climate Tech SuperCluster Accelerator Program.
