Smart East Karlsruhe
Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
About
Founded in 2021, Smart East Karlsruhe is a ngo headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany specializing in Solar, Energy Storage, Hydrogen.
Smart East Karlsruhe is a flagship research and demonstration project launched in 2021 that transforms an industrial district in Karlsruhe's east into a smart, energy-optimized, climate-neutral neighborhood. The initiative integrates distributed solar generation, intelligent demand flexibility, electric vehicle charging optimization, and digital energy management across multiple buildings. Key achievements include installing four photovoltaic systems, establishing 46 charging points with bidirectional charging capability, building a district energy management platform, and reducing annual CO2 emissions by 270 tonnes. The project operates as a collaborative ecosystem involving research institutions (FZI, KIT), municipal utilities (Stadtwerke Karlsruhe), energy IT companies (Seven2one), and emerging startups (Solarize, InnoCharge). Initially funded by Baden-Württemberg's Environment Ministry (€1M, 2021-2024), Smart East continues under the EU-funded WeForming project, serving as a blueprint for sustainable urban energy transformation across Europe.
