Susteps is an international research initiative coordinated by TÜBİTAK that advances sustainable biofuel production from microalgae. The project integrates CO2 capture from high-emission sources with nutrient-rich wastewater to cultivate microalgae, which are then converted to biocrude through optimized hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). Key components include catalytic biocrude upgrading using green hydrogen, aqueous stream valorization to extract value-added chemicals, and comprehensive sustainability assessment across economic, environmental, and social dimensions. The consortium comprises scientific, technological, and regional partners from Europe, North America, Africa, and South America, coordinated across eight work packages spanning microalgae cultivation, process conversion, upgrading, hydrogen production, and international knowledge-sharing. The project targets Technology Readiness Level 4-5 with objectives to reduce production costs, improve process efficiency, and contribute to net-zero emissions by 2050.
