The Swedish Electricity Storage and Balancing Centre is a competence development hub focusing on system flexibility in electrical power systems. The centre operates across three research layers: Materials and Devices for Energy Storage, investigating suitability of materials and devices for various storage applications considering lifetime and resource constraints; Intelligent Energy Management, exploring system communication and control opportunities for secure and optimal power system operation; and Systems, considering the entire energy system including electric grids and renewable integration. The centre conducts research on second-life battery applications, offshore wind transmission technologies (HVAC vs HVDC), and addresses challenges posed by large-scale expansion of variable renewable energy sources including wind and solar.
