Switchcoal is a groundbreaking research project that conducted a comprehensive energy potential analysis to evaluate the technical, economic, and manufacturing feasibility of replacing all worldwide coal plants with solar-wind-battery systems by 2030. The study demonstrates that this transition is not only technically possible but economically profitable, with potential additional profits of US$6 trillion through reduced operating costs. The analysis covers all 2,500 global coal plant locations, incorporating physical modeling of wind-solar potential and economic modeling for investment needs and ROI. The project also examines health impacts, employee retraining, and job creation opportunities. Key findings show that switching 90% of coal plants to renewables could help keep the 1.5°C climate pathway within reach and close a projected 22 Gt CO2e emissions gap by 2030.
