About
Terasun is a renewable energy company headquartered in Seville, Spain specializing in Solar.
Terasun is a 3-year collaborative research project funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe programme (Grant Agreement n 101147545) that unites photovoltaic experts across 7 partners from 6 countries. The project aims to develop next-generation crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cell and module technologies with emphasis on silicon heterojunction (SHJ) technology. Key objectives include achieving solar cell efficiencies greater than 25.5% and module efficiencies over 23.5%, while reducing Si wafer and contacting costs by 50% and lowering carbon footprint by up to 75%. The project addresses critical challenges in PV manufacturing through innovations in epitaxially-grown wafers requiring less energy, alternatives to hydrogenated amorphous silicon for passivation, indium-free transparent conductive oxides, silver-free metallization using copper electroplating, and bismuth-free interconnection methods. Research focuses on advanced light-trapping techniques, novel passivating contacts, cost-effective copper metallization, and processes to enable terawatt-scale production of high-efficiency c-Si solar cells while minimizing environmental impact and reliance on critical materials.
