Turbonik GmbH, founded in 2017 as a spin-off from Fraunhofer UMSICHT, specializes in micro-steam turbine (MDT) technology for industrial power generation. The company designs turbines that enable efficient electricity generation from steam in manufacturing facilities, chemical plants, steel works, and other industries where conventional turbine technology is unsuitable due to small steam volumes and space constraints. Their turbines operate within pressure ratios greater than 2:1 and steam flows exceeding 1.2 tonnes per hour, with maximum capacity around 10 tonnes per hour. The technology supports decarbonization by enabling combined heat and power generation and reducing reliance on grid electricity. Turbonik is headquartered at the h2herten hydrogen application center, where they integrate renewable energy sources including wind and photovoltaic systems.
