About
Founded in 2023, WaterMellon is a ngo headquartered in Spain specializing in Biomass.
WaterMellon PRIMA is a groundbreaking initiative under the EU's PRIMA Programme designed to tackle extreme drought and water scarcity in the Mediterranean region. The project develops novel farming systems combining traditional water harvesting techniques with modern sustainable agriculture practices. It focuses on drought-resilient and saline-tolerant crop species, including carob, teff, quinoa, sorghum, millet, opuntia, and tritordeum. The project establishes regional living labs and demonstration sites across Italy, Greece, Morocco, Algeria, Spain, Cyprus, and Lebanon. It emphasizes farmer engagement in research and development, circular economy-based value chains, community-driven innovation, and revival of ancient water conservation methods. Key activities include stakeholder workshops, farmer group meetings, training programs, and the development of climate-smart cropping systems for arid, semi-arid, and saline soils.
