About
Founded in 2019, Windfloat Atlantic is a private headquartered in Madrid, Spain specializing in Wind.
Windfloat Atlantic is a pioneering floating offshore wind farm situated approximately 18 km off the coast of Viana do Castelo, Portugal, in water depths around 100 meters. Connected to the grid in late 2019 and commissioned in 2020, it represents the world's first semi-submersible floating offshore wind installation. The project comprises three semi-submersible triangular floating platforms, each supporting an 8.4 MW wind turbine, for a total capacity of 25.2 MW. Each floater is anchored to the seabed using three anchors at approximately 95 meters depth. The facility avoids 33,000 tonnes of CO2 annually and supplies approximately 25,000 Portuguese households. The project was developed by Windplus, S.A., a joint venture between Ocean Winds (50% EDP Renewables, 50% ENGIE), Repsol, and Principle Power Inc., with an investment of approximately 120 million euros. More than 500 highly qualified professionals were involved in development and construction, with over half of direct supplies sourced from Portuguese and Spanish companies.
