WiValdi Research Wind Farm
Krummendeich, Lower Saxony, Germany
About
Founded in 2023, WiValdi Research Wind Farm is a government headquartered in Krummendeich, Germany specializing in Wind.
WiValdi (Wind Validation) is a unique research infrastructure developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in collaboration with the Research Alliance Wind Energy and Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems. The facility features two identical Enercon E-115 EP3 wind turbines (OPUS 1 and OPUS 2), each 4.2 MW capacity, positioned in tandem to enable comprehensive wake flow studies. Each turbine is instrumented with approximately 1,300 sensors, with total site instrumentation reaching 3,500 sensors distributed across the turbines, meteorological masts, and field equipment. The research facility includes five meteorological measuring masts and IEC-compliant wind measurement stations positioned to capture detailed turbulence and wind field data. The site serves as an open-air laboratory for studying wind turbine efficiency, noise reduction, rotor blade performance, wake effects, grid integration, bird/bat navigation impacts, and social acceptance of wind farms. Infrastructure includes a data management system with synchronized measurement collection, storage, and remote access capabilities. Operational service life planned for approximately 20 years from 2023.
