Grassa
Bennekom, Netherlands
About
Founded in 2014, Grassa is a dairy industry manufacturer based in Bennekom, Netherlands selling ingredients & cultures.
Grassa is a Dutch company that extracts food and feed ingredients from grass already grown on dairy farms. Farmers allocate 3-5 hectares of grassland to the Grassa process. The grass is mown and pressed at local presses, and the opened grass fibre is returned to the farm as roughage for dairy cows, ready to feed after about two weeks. The juice is refined centrally into protein concentrates, protein isolates, a plant-based protein and a prebiotic sugar. The company states the approach improves nutrient efficiency and reduces nitrogen losses and emissions on dairy farms, and reports a Life Cycle Analysis developed with Blonk. Founded in 2014, Grassa spent a decade on research before running a first pilot press in 2024 at Wageningen University & Research Campus. Its demo press at Zonnepark Branderwal is under construction and set to open in spring 2026, and a full-scale refinery is planned. The company works with partners including Low Food Labs, Schouten Europe and Studio Fava on the functional properties of grass protein, and participates in the BIO4Africa project.
