About
Founded in 1948, NIZO is a dairy industry service provider based in Ede, Netherlands selling engineering & services, testing & quality.
NIZO is an independent, private contract research organisation based in Ede, the Netherlands, working on food and health products. It was founded by the Dutch dairy industry and has been operating since 1948. A management buy-out in 2009 made it a private, independent company. Gilde Healthcare took a majority share in 2016, and OostNL joined as a partner in 2025. NIZO offers contract research, consultancy, lab and pilot-plant facilities covering bacteria, proteins and processing. Its dairy heritage includes work on casein micelles, whey proteins and milk protein ingredients, and it has projects on dairy proteins, cheese and ice cream. Its services include protein extraction and benchmarking, process design and upscaling, contract manufacturing, food safety and chain control, sensory and microstructure analysis, and health benefit substantiation. NIZO operates Europe's largest open-access, food-grade pilot plant and a Biotechnology Fermentation Factory for precision fermentation up to 10,000 litres. Around 50% of its turnover comes from outside the Netherlands, and it works with food and health companies worldwide.
