AboutaShelter

AboutaShelter is a community organisation based in Argyroupoli, Greece working on animal welfare.

AboutaShelter is a small animal shelter in Argyroupoli village, Rethymno, Crete, run by its founder Haris. It rescues, feeds, provides medical treatment and rehabilitation for abandoned, sick and abused stray dogs and cats, and works to rehome them with adoptive families through adoption, fostering and sponsorship. The founder started the project after losing a pet dog and became concerned by the number of sick, malnourished and chained dogs on Crete. The shelter operates from a former horse property that was cleared and rebuilt, and is funded through donations and sponsorship. Its long-term plans include a café and community space where visitors can meet the animals. The project is run largely by one person with some help from supporters, and the website is available in English with machine-translated content.
