About

Founded in 2015, Asterias Starfish Foundation is a non-governmental organisation based in Mytilene, Greece working on refugees & migration, humanitarian aid & disaster relief, education +1 more.

Asterias Starfish Foundation is a Greek non-governmental organisation founded in 2015 by locals on Lesvos in response to the refugee arrivals on the island. It provided practical help to refugees and vulnerable local residents, including temporary reception and transit camp operations at OXY, which supported almost 200,000 people in 2015, aid distribution, a multilingual library, bike workshops, a safehouse for women and children, sewing and self-defence programmes, and volunteer-led activities. Its base is OpenSpace, a co-working and opportunity hub in Mytilene. The foundation announced in late 2023 that it had suspended operations and handed over its current projects to other organisations, though it may return if needs arise. It is registered in Greece and is listed in the Registry of Greek and Foreign Non-Governmental Organizations.
