Periferia is an international non-profit association (AISBL) founded in 1998 that works on participatory democracy and social transformation. It was created from experiences in Brazil and is based in Brussels, with activity in Wallonia, Brussels, south-west France and Latin America. Its work covers community organizing, participatory budgeting, Community Land Trusts, inclusive and gender-aware use of public space, and popular education. Periferia runs public debate spaces and workshops that bring together multiple stakeholders, often giving priority to people who are less used to taking part in decision-making. It also produces publications, databases, podcasts, training and research, and provides methodological support to groups and organisations. Its activities include the Football 3 method, which uses democratic football rules to promote dialogue and shared use of space. The association also organises meetings such as the annual general assembly and public events.
