About
Founded in 1974, Itaipu Binacional is a government headquartered in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil specializing in Hydro, Solar, Hydrogen.
Itaipu Binacional is an international entity created by treaty between Brazil and Paraguay on April 26, 1973, and began operations in 1974. The hydroelectric facility is located on the Paraná River at the border between the two nations. With 20 generating units of 700 MW each, the plant has generated over 3.1 billion megawatt-hours since 1984, making it the single plant that has produced the most energy in history. The reservoir extends 170 km along the Paraná River and serves multiple purposes including energy generation, municipal water supply, agriculture, fish production, tourism, and wildlife conservation. Beyond electricity production, Itaipu Binacional operates as a binational benchmark for sustainable territorial development, implementing integrated environmental, social, and economic initiatives across Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraguay. These initiatives include forest conservation (over 100,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest), social programs serving 1.3 million people, water resource management, waste management and recycling systems, indigenous community support, agricultural sustainability, and climate action programs. The company maintains extensive research and monitoring programs related to water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and greenhouse gas emissions. It also promotes renewable energy expansion through solar photovoltaic projects and emerging technologies like floating solar panels and hydrogen fuel cells. Itaipu actively combats climate misinformation and participates in international climate governance, including support for COP30.
