The National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) was legally established on 17 December 2020 as The Center of Excellence Innovation of Battery and Renewable Energy Foundation. It is Indonesia's leading independent institute for electrochemical energy storage science and technology. NBRI supports research, training, and education with a focus on advancing battery technology, particularly lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. The institute's core mission is to encourage and support battery manufacturing using local resources, enabling Indonesia to achieve energy independence. NBRI serves as a platform bringing together scientists, academicians, industry partners, government, and stakeholders focused on battery technology. The institute maintains state-of-the-art laboratory capabilities and strong international affiliations, supported by the UK Government's Global Challenge Research Fund as part of Queen Mary University of London's allocation.
