Ocean Grazer is an innovative energy storage company specializing in underground pumped hydropower systems. Founded as a spin-off from the University of Groningen in 2013, the company initially focused on offshore wave energy before pivoting to develop the Ocean Battery and its successor, AquaVault. AquaVault uses deep underground shafts (12-18 meters diameter, exceeding 300 meters deep) to create artificial elevation differences for pumped hydro storage, enabling efficient energy balancing without rare materials like lithium or cobalt. The technology addresses critical grid flexibility challenges by storing surplus renewable energy and releasing it during periods of high demand. The company is developing its first pilot project in Sellingerbeetse, Netherlands, with approximately 1 MW capacity and 1.5 MWh storage. AquaVault has been tested offshore at Eemshaven and won the CES Best-of-Innovation Award in 2022.
