Società Elettrica in Morbegno is a cooperative energy company with deep roots in northern Italy, founded in 1897. The company operates eight hydroelectric installations in the Valtellina/Alto Lario region with a combined capacity of 11 MW. In 2002, SEM acquired the local distribution network from ENEL, becoming the sole distributor for Morbegno, Cosio Valtellino, Bema, and Rasura. The company established a district heating (teleriscaldamento) network covering over 35 km, serving approximately 75,000 kW of connected load through a 2006 cogeneration plant. SEM is developing an additional biomass-fired ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) thermal-electric power plant with an electrical output of 990 kWe and thermal recovery of approximately 4,800 kWth. The district heating system eliminated gas connections from individual buildings, improving safety and reducing emissions. SEM currently distributes electricity to approximately 13,000 customers consuming about 64 million kWh annually.
