SHERPA (new Solutions for Hydropower plants to Enhance operational Range, Performance and improve environmental impact) is an EU-funded initiative focused on transforming hydropower plant operations for enhanced sustainability and efficiency. The project addresses critical challenges including environmental flow constraints, turbine damage from off-design operation, and water quality/biodiversity concerns. Core solutions include mechanical improvements (in-turbine air injection, advanced coatings, redesigned runners), electrical systems for flexible operation, comprehensive monitoring and simulation tools, and environmental impact assessment methodologies. The project employs a three-phase iterative approach across eight work packages, with consortium partners including Iberdrola (coordinator), AIMEN Technology Centre, AECOM, and others.
